“Hey, I didn’t think you owned anything fun,” he huffs in disbelief before pulling a purple ball from the drawer. He bounces it on the little floor before him, watching it obediently return to his hand. “This elicits too much joy—it couldn’t possibly be yours. Did your last prisoner put it here?” Death may actually find this Imperial to be funny.
(Death cannot decide whether she admires or animatedly dislikes this woman. Though, this is a common predicament when it comes to humans.)
“Is it not the darkest parts of ourselves that ultimately make us who we are?”
“No,” the king admits. “I’m hoping to find something far better.”
“Surely you’ve seen a woman before.”
“Go live,” she urges softly. “While you still can.”
I feel like it might be just a little bit early for this reveal? Now Kitt practically knows he’s going to die. How is this book going to continue? What else might happen other than the chapters where Mara watches Blair and Lenny? I feel like this might just be their story at this point as I’ve learned more about them than the characters the book is supposedly focusing on.
Mara was wrong. She does indeed know this woman. In the Purging Trials—a stab wound to her abdomen. Death was there. In the Scorches—exhausted and on the brink of consciousness. Death was there. In a dark sewer—swelling with water and drowning out hope. Death was there. This soul is no stranger to ruin.
Yes, she looks forward to meeting Paedyn Gray again. In this life and the next.
back to her side. “Don’t do anything—” “And what are you going to do about it?” “—stupid,” the Imperial finishes weakly.
He didn’t just know this woman. He loved her.
Lenny stares down at his hands in astonishment. “It was me, idiot,” Blair pants, wiping blood from her nose. “Right.” Lenny crouches beside her. “Of course it was.”
“This is between you and me. Leave gingersnap out of it.” The Imperial winces slightly. “Well, that was almost really touching—” “Shut up,” Blair rasps.
“I’m not trying to die,” I say quickly. “I’m only trying to get your attention.” “You have my attention because you are dying.” “Fine.”
“Shit.” The Tele lifts her widening gaze to his, nearly laughing. “You’re in love with her.”
“In fact,” he says slowly, “I would have believed you were a deity, if only you said so. I wouldn’t have questioned worshiping something so divine.”
“I am not a killer.” Her correction is clipped. A crease forms between the king’s brows. “But you are… Death.” “I am the absence of Life,” Mara says simply. “Just as darkness is merely a lack of light. I only collect souls when Life decides to let them go.”
“And I am your brother,” the king returns. “Always. No matter what.” His Enforcer nods. “You and me. Always.” Fervently, that is all Kitt Azer wants in this life he now slips from.
