This is for every single one of you who puts yourself last. Who cheers on everyone else, and would drop everything in the middle of the night for those you love. Who never wants to be a burden, or be in the way. Please take care of yourself. You can’t pour from an empty cup. Be a good girl and let Blake remind you just how deserving you are.
Just fifteen minutes later, I walk out and find Harper curled up at the end of my sofa, a book in her hands, chewing on the cuticle of her thumb, crying. The fuck? Absolutely not. “What’s wrong?” Her gaze jumps up to mine, startled, and she laughs and wipes her eyes. “Oh, it’s fiction. Stupid books make me cry sometimes. I went to one book club meeting and got hooked. I’m reading this for the next one, and I’m a mess.”
“Why are you so hot?” I ask, not at all embarrassed that the words came out of my mouth because the man should have statues made of his likeness. “Like how? It’s unfair. It’s probably illegal. You could go to jail, Blake.”
“Also, hold on.” She props her hands on her hips and frowns up at me. “Really?” She looks … I don’t even know. “What? What did I do? I haven’t even seen you.” She shakes her head and points at my head, where I’m wearing a hat. “Blake, you’re in a backward baseball hat.” “Is that a crime? If so, handcuff me, sugar.” I wink at her, and she presses her lips together so she doesn’t burst out laughing.
“It absolutely should be illegal for you to look like that. Are you trying to make my ovaries explode? Because it’s working. I’m pretty sure they’re doing a happy dance right now.”
