Something I’ve heard a few people say after having a baby: “My heart now lives permanently outside of my body.” The heart being the child. The idea being that your heart is no longer yours; it has agency and is out of your control. But that day at the farmers’ market, I remember thinking that having a kid would also be a lot like having your embarrassment live outside of your body. And I, personally, do enough to embarrass myself on a daily basis. I could not imagine letting an entity capable of embarrassing me just walk around like that.
