There were hundreds of people, and everyone looked like me.
That was the beauty of Howard. Every signal told students that we could be anything—that we were young, gifted, and black, and we shouldn’t let anything get in the way of our success.
But I also knew there was an important role on the inside, sitting at the table where the decisions were being made.
I reflected on it all—about why I ran for office, whom I had come there to help, and the difference between getting convictions and having conviction.
It’s time that we all accept that addiction is a disease, that it wreaks havoc on people’s lives
We need to accept hard truths about the systemic racism that has allowed this to happen. And we need to turn that understanding into policies and practices that can actually change it.
instead of people dealing drugs on the corner, people in suits and ties and white coats are dealing a drug while drugmakers cover up the dangers.
Victories won can be lost in complacency. Battles lost can be won with new effort.
