the human brain registers four seconds of silence as rejection,
It’s easier to just blame Ezra. It’s always easier to blame him rather than admit anything that I might regret later, even if it’s only to myself.
His answering smile only elicits more fluttering beneath my ribs, so much so that it threatens to steal my breath.
“One thing I have learned about men—if it is worth thinking about, it is worth talking about.”
“If you cannot talk about it, then you should not do it.”
I can’t help the quiet laugh that escapes me. “Fine, fine. You’re the boss.” “Powerful woman,” she teases. My smile is bright, even if thoughts of Ezra are still lingering at the back of my mind. “You’re goddamned right.”
“I always want to know what you’re feeling. Even if it’s hard. Especially if it’s hard. I want to be there for you no matter what.”
“You’re infuriating,” I groan. He leans in slightly, lowering his voice. “But you like it.”
“I’m learning that it’s the things you don’t say that I should be paying attention to, Dani. That’s usually where your real feelings are.”
“You can always say no, Dani. But do you really want to?”
This woman will never turn down the chance to make something simple into a challenge.
from what I’ve been able to gather from others…he became cruel. I guess it was always inside him, he just needed reasons to justify letting it out.”
“I like you greedy for me,” I tell her huskily.
“Tell me what you want.”
“You said…you said I’m yours,” I manage, my voice too thick to even remotely pass as casual. “But are you mine?” His smile is brilliant, and that increasingly familiar feeling of it lighting up all the dark corners hiding inside me is overwhelming. “I’ve been yours for ages, Dani,” he says, his voice a low, sweet murmur. “I’ve just been waiting for you to catch up.”
I wonder what she would think if she knew how incredibly gone I am for her.
I’m greedy for any time I get to spend with her.
That this prickly woman with her hidden smile and her fierce demeanor has somehow become the reason I get out of bed in the morning, the person I think about just before I go to sleep. She’s become everything. And I’m completely, irrevocably in love with her.
I can wait, I tell myself. Until she’s ready to hear it. I’ll wait as long as it takes for her. Because I meant it, what I told her all those weeks ago. That she’s absolutely worth staying for.
“You know, I’ve learned a lot about family in the last few days. I’ve learned that the loyalty we give because of blood isn’t always deserved.
“Did you hurt him?” I shake my head. “Not really.” “Pity,” she says blandly.
She really does make me feel…peaceful. I could get addicted to that feeling.
