Kane, our money launderer. Theo, the protector. Cash, our hacker. Then there was me, the deliverer.
My best friend’s little sister. Sweetest girl on the face of the planet. And to my great misfortune, the sexiest one, too.
Looking like the only place she belonged was on the back of my bike.
she nestled into my side like it was what she was meant to do. Her aura invaded my senses. She smelled like a vineyard of honeysuckle. A sweet fucking moonflower.
Maybe I should have accepted it as my fate. That it was already over. Maybe I should have known Raven Tayte was really going to be the end of me.
I took to the street, and there was no missing the thrill that ran through her being. This girl who fit me like a glove who I forever had to keep at arm’s length.
“You fuckin’ count, Raven. Count more than anyone else.”
Don’t push me, Raven. You don’t want to see what it looks like when I come unhinged. Think it’s best if you keep your conquests to yourself. Don’t want to think of you with another man, and I sure as fuck don’t want to watch you with one.
“Look at you, Raven. Look at who you are. If you could only see the way I see you. You are brave and strong. So goddamn beautiful. A bloom in the middle of the darkest night.”
Gotta remember family is who you love most, and I love you all the most, so don’t you forget it.”
Her own promises and some kind of plea. Every oath I had made spiraled through me. Love. Protect. Never cause harm to the innocent.
Needed to see your face because you’re the only thing in this world that keeps me sane. Only thing that grounds me to reality when I feel it slipping.
It was moments like these when I became a fool who believed. A fool who thought he might actually see me the way I wanted him to.
I wanted to be more than his favorite. I wanted to be his everything.
“It’s where I want to be, Raven. Right here with you whenever you need me.” “Then stay. You make it better, Otto.”
A tortured moon that hung in an ominous sky. Disfigured and misshapen. The earth was barren beneath it. All except for the single moonflower that cracked the dirt and blossomed beneath the pale, murky light.
“You shouldn’t be lookin’ at me like that, Raven.” “And what am I looking at you like?” “Like you want me to crawl back into that bed with you.”
“Maybe that’s exactly what I want you to do.”
“Would be the luckiest man alive, getting to touch you. But I swore to myself a long time ago that I would never hurt you, and I fuckin’ meant it.”
I wanted to fly. I wanted to rise. And I knew, all the way down to the deepest parts of me, that I wanted to rise with him.
“Born to dance with you.” It was a breathy murmur from her mouth.
It was times like these when Raven would get modest. Like she didn’t know the effect she had on me. The influence. Like she didn’t get that she could ask anything of me, and it was done.
“I’m not worthy of touching you, Raven. Not even close.” “To me, you’re the only one who is.”
“You deserve the whole fuckin’ world, Raven Tayte. To be loved and adored. Touched in every way you want to be. But I’m not that guy.”
gaze. Her delicate throat bobbed when she swallowed. “I feel liberated, Otto. Different in the best way. Or like maybe I just found a piece of myself that I had been missing.”
Don’t look at me that way. Look at me. At who I am. As a whole. As a person. As the woman who wants this with you.” “I’ve always seen you, Raven.”
It’s always been you, Otto. You have always been my safe place. My secret place.”
“You are worth it, Raven. You are worth everything. But I don’t want to wreck what we are.” “What are we, Otto? Because this feels like us to me.”
“You think these arms weren’t made to hold you? You think I’m not made to carry every-fucking-thing that you are?”
I carefully eased back to stare up at the man who’d always been everything to me. The one who’d made me feel safe. The one who’d seen me in a different light than anyone had before. The one I’d always been willing to sacrifice for. The one I’d do anything for.
Otto’s entire being shifts whenever you come into the room. You’re his gravity, Raven.”
“You are the first thought I have when I open my eyes in the morning and the last one before I go to sleep. You are the thunder in my veins and the chaos in my spirit. You are everything I want and the one thing I’m not supposed to have.”
“It means I’m so fuckin’ in love with you, so fuckin’ gone for you, that there’s no chance my world could spin right without you in it. So fuckin’ in love with you that I feel like I’m ripping apart every time I look at you. You are my heart, and that’s the truth.”
“You are the light inside of me, Raven. Only thing that could ever lead me out of the dark. Gonna love you through it all. Under every endless moon. And when dawn finally breaks, I will watch you rise.”
“You’re my favorite person in the world, Otto Hudson.” Otto reached down and hooked his pinky with mine. “And you, Raven Tayte, are mine.”
