Being able to hear animals talk was incredibly rare even in the magical community. I’d been five when I first heard a bird do more than chirp, or so I’d thought. Luckily, I’d been smart enough not to tell my parents and kept it to myself. Right before my seventh birthday was when I finally knew for sure and heard something clearly.

They had a tradition of sacrificing their youngest child to boost the power of their male heir. Insane, right?

So the only time I didn’t disappoint my parents was when I ate up more and more books on magical theory and languages, studied histories of ancient civilizations long gone that our beliefs came from.

I blinked up into pretty blue eyes and wondered if he worked weekends as a wall since ouch.

“An aphrodisiac potion,” Gregg said in a monotone voice. “How did you acquire that? There’s no chance you know how to make one,” he snapped with a growl. “Her parents. They want us mated. She would lose their deal with this.”

He was much taller than me, at least six-four, and had broad shoulders but not too built like those creepy guys that kiss their muscles or name their arms. His black hair was styled in a longer quiff that faded fast and shaved down completely to his neck.

“So that’s what you were hiding and why you wanted to get rid of it so fast,” he muttered in between gasps of air. He gave me a soft kiss when I flinched. “Thank you for sharing your purity with me. I won’t ever tell how fucking powerful you are. I’m sure you had your reasons for hiding it with your family.”

“I’m Professor Derek Wyatt and the teacher of the class.” I slowly looked up at him, knowing that voice and unable to hide the horror I was feeling as my gaze landed on him. He was more than the teacher of the class. He was the man who had taken my purity. This wasn’t a classroom like the one it had happened in. It was the classroom. It was his classroom. We’d done it on his desk right there. Fuck. My. Life. I’d lost my purity to a professor.

looked like one. It was that type of vehicle. Fine, I didn’t know shit about cars. It was green.

He was six feet of all sexy man. His darker honey-blond hair was cut short, spiked up like he’d just rolled out of bed but unlike guys who took time to make it look that way it was clear he didn’t give a fuck and it simply happened. He was thick and I meant it in a good way, like he spent time in the gym but also like hard labor made him have girth, not just muscles for show. The guy was a man, filled in and just… Wow. His eyes looked brown, but I couldn’t tell from this distance as he was focused on what he was reading.

He made me finish twice, licking his fingers clean when he was done and my body was still twitching with aftershocks. “You taste like you should be my girlfriend, foxy.” He nodded when I flinched. “You’ll listen to your friend and that’s fine. I can be patient.”

Prof. A. Hole: I really did need to speak with you. Come by my office hours. Prof. A. Hole: Why did Quinn just bite me? What did you do to my familiar? He’s seriously pissed at me. Prof. A. Hole: He’s mad I mistreated you? How did I mistreat you? What did you tell him? Time to explain, goddess. Prof. A. Hole: Okay, I can admit when I’m an idiot. I didn’t heal you. I assumed you could, but you can’t if you were hiding your magic. You wouldn’t have been taught that level. I’m sorry, goddess. That was an honest oversight since you’re powerful. Forgive me? Prof. A. Hole: I’m waiting for you at my ...more

Prof. A. Hole: Why did you just leave campus with Sergey Koval? Do you have any idea who he is? Prof. A. Hole: Okay, enough ignoring me, Bevin. I said I was sorry. I’ll even forgive you for ditching me after class and not coming to office hours like I said, but I have to talk to you. Prof. A. Hole: Are you okay? I just heard what happened with campus security. They found people tailing you? Are you safe, goddess? Prof. A. Hole: Please answer me and at least tell me you’re safe.

Prof. A. Hole: Well clearly, I understand what you were doing with him since I can feel him in your room. You need to know who he is, Bevin. Stop ignoring me. I’m trying to protect you. Prof. A. Hole: Come to my office in the morning so we can talk school and other things. Or my classroom. Either, but you need to come. Prof. A. Hole: Why are you going off campus with both of them? Where are you going? How can I protect you if you keep ignoring me? Prof. A. Hole: This is getting old, Bevin. When are you coming back?

Prof. A. Hole: What the fuck was that at lunch? I get you—seriously, what the fuck, Bevin? We need to have a real talk because I don’t even know where that came from. We were good Thursday and I fucked up not healing you and I’m sorry for that, but the rest of this is out of line. Prof. A. Hole: Bevin, I’m done with this game. Reply or call me or I’m going to come to your room and I won’t care who is there.

Bevin: I wasn’t playing games. I didn’t even read your messages. I didn’t give you this number, and the outline I received about the independent study made it clear we should communicate via email. I assume it’s the same for my power assessor. If you need to talk with me, please contact me that way going forward and we can arrange a time to meet in the library study rooms. Thank you.

Prof. A. Hole: You’re kidding me, right? Are you teasing me, goddess? I’m not a fan of this sort of teasing. Bevin: I’m not teasing at all. I also asked you to stop calling me that. I get you wanted—let’s just stop with extras and handle what we need to since I promised not to drop the independent study. Prof. A. Hole: What the hell happened? I thought we were good. You don’t want to do the study, fine, but you blew up at me and put words in my mouth AGAIN. We need to discuss this.

Bevin: I’ve said all that I need to. E-mail me if you need to discuss class. I’m uncomfortable texting with a professor. Prof. A. Hole: Come to my office right now. Bevin: I apologize, Professor Wyatt, but right now doesn’t work for me as I’m about to start a tutoring session. If you e-mail other times to meet, we can meet up at the library in one of the visible study rooms.

Prof. A. Hole: What the fuck happened, Bevin? I don’t even know how to try and process this. You’re really not fucking with me, are you? Bevin: No, I’m not. I thank you for your concern, Professor Wyatt, but I’m fine, and if I have any issues, I will take them up with the appropriate parties, not my teacher.

Prof. A. Hole: I’m more than that and we both know it. I’ll let you cool off a bit, but then we’ll discuss all of this face-to-face and discuss where we veered off course. Enjoy your tutoring and I’ll see you very soon.

I glanced down at his groin and took in a slow breath. “I’d like to say I look forward to confirming that, but I’m, um, well—” “Being courted by Kelton Rose and Sergey Koval? Yeah, I noticed that at lunch yesterday. I don’t care. I caught you fair and square and now I am too unless you tell me you’re not into me.”
