The work parties were fired on from time to time. British and American sentries alike were fired on repeatedly. On August 2, as Lieutenant Samuel Bixby of Connecticut recorded in his diary, “One of Gen[eral] Washington’s riflemen was killed by the regulars today and then hung! up by the neck!” His comrades, seeing this, were much enraged and immediately asked leave of the Gen[eral] to go down and do as they pleased.
