“So, who is she?” On this day, where everything feels like a sign, I don’t hesitate when I say, “My future wife.”
“I probably would’ve proposed a handful of times by now if you were. Nice. Mean. I’ll take you any way I can get you.”
“Why would I go along pretending that the wedding I had with this girl I’ve had a crush on for years is legitimate? Why would I force myself to spend time with her for an entire season to make sure she lands her dream job at the end of it? Hmm, I’m not sure, Kenny. Let’s think about that.”
“C’mon wife. Play along.”
Kennedy might have an expiration date on this marriage, but all I’ve heard is that I got six long months to get my wife to fall for me.
“I was just going to get your name tattooed there since I couldn’t wear a ring while I was playing, but this will do.”
There’s only one bed. Of course there’s only
“You look like you’re going to say something a little bit evil, break my heart, and I’ll end up thanking you for it.”
“You’re out of your mind if you think you’re not exactly the kind of woman a man would want. Just because you’re not comfortable with showing physical affection doesn’t make you any less of a woman, Ken.”
“Absolutely not. What do you think? That I’m made of money? You can order off the two-for-twenty menu, and if you’re a good girl and eat all your dinner, maybe I’ll splurge and get you a molten chocolate cake for dessert.”
“You’ve never been hotter than you are right now, just so you know.”
“Put me out of my misery, Kenny, and tell me you’re coming for me.”
“Grief seems like a privilege, in a way,” she says. “To have loved someone so much that you can’t imagine life without them. I’ve never felt that.”
“Rhodes,” he says. “Her last name is Rhodes. Now get your fucking hands off my wife.”
“God sure did take his time on you, honey.”
“I like holding your hand in public.” He doesn’t even try to lower his voice when he adds, “And I like holding your throat in private.”
“I remember every single thing about you, Kenny. In case you haven’t figured it out already, you’re my favorite subject to study.”
“I live, laugh, love you too.”
You’re my answered prayer.
“Because you’re worth more than how you’ve been treated the last three years, and I love you enough to make sure you know that. I love you enough to make sure you start living up to your potential.”
But falling in love with Isaiah wasn’t a big, planned event. It was buying toothbrushes and providing food when I was too busy to eat. It was his mother’s ring and eating dinner together in a booth at Chili’s.
“I have spent my entire life looking for validation, seeking attention, hoping for just a bit of acknowledgment that I exist, and you…” I shake my head. “You waltzed into my life and never left me alone.”
