“What’s wrong?” I ask quietly while the rest of the table is too busy chatting to hear me. “You put fries on my burger.” “Yeah. That’s how you eat your burgers.” Big brown eyes look up at me. “How did you remember that? I had one once with you.” I huff a laugh. “I remember every single thing about you, Kenny. In case you haven’t figured it out already, you’re my favorite subject to study.”
My voice is all tease. “You doing okay over there, Doc?” She swallows hard. “I hate you.” “Those aren’t the words you used while you were riding my face this morning.”
“They have airbrush T-shirts here,” Kennedy says, her cheek resting on my back. “Are you thinking what I’m thinking?” “That we should get Max one with his name on it?” “Oh.” My lip curls. “No, I was thinking we should get couples shirts. You wear my name. I wear yours.”
“I don’t care what your last name was, Kenny. I only care what it is now.” She chuckles. “You do know my last name isn’t actually Rhodes, right? Just because we’re married doesn’t mean I automatically took your last name.” “Well, we should probably do something about that.”
“Close the curtain.” “No.” His jaw tics. “Kenny, I could give two fucks what the view out there looks like, but I’m sure as hell not sharing this view of you with anyone else. Close the fucking curtain.”
With my back to the pier, I look up and say, “This is the only show I want to watch right now.” “God,” he exhales, palm sliding over my head. “The best girl.” “Your only girl,” I correct him. “Damn straight you are.”
For the first time in my life, it wasn’t hard to believe that someone could feel that way about me, because he had spent months showing me. His words were simply a reminder of what I already knew. Isaiah loves me.
“Don’t even think about trying to justify some ludicrous situation about me running away from you. I don’t want to hear it. I love you. You know I love you. I will continue to love you whether you’re in San Francisco or some other city. That’s not going to change, but you’re sure as hell not staying in Chicago, Kennedy.”
“I know when they called you, they offered you the job, and you turned them down. But you’re going. I can’t let you stay here because of me.”
“You’ve never gotten a say in your own life, and the last thing I’m going to do is take that away from you again. Every option is yours, Kenny. Whatever you want to do, I will be your biggest supporter. But I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t allow you the space to fulfill your goals, to live up to everything you’ve worked so hard for.”
I’ll never be able to thank him enough for being unwavering in his feelings for me, but I’m going to spend the rest of my life making sure he feels as safe and secure with me as he’s made me feel with him.
But falling in love with Isaiah wasn’t a big, planned event. It was buying toothbrushes and providing food when I was too busy to eat. It was his mother’s ring and eating dinner together in a booth at Chili’s.
“You’re staying here.” “I am.” “We get to work together. Travel together.” “We do.” “And you love me.” “So much.” That grin grows. “But I swear, Isaiah, if you ever bring me divorce papers again, I’ll be real tempted to sign them with something other than an I love you.”
“Missed you.” She chuckles. “It’s been two songs.” “Do you think that matters?”
“Four out of five,” Kai adds. “One to go. It’ll happen soon, Rio.” “Well, she better be fucking great, making me wait this long to meet her.” “What if it’s someone you’ve already met and you have no idea?” Ryan asks. “Nah,” Rio brushes him off. “I can’t think of a single person I already know that I’d be remotely interested in.”
