Ethan ran his fingers over the faded cover, a lump forming in his throat. He missed her fiercely, her wisdom, her kindness, the way she could always see the best in people, even grumpy, cynical handymen like him.

“Is it about Miss Abby? Mom says you like her.” Ethan shot a glare at his sister, who held up her hands innocently. “Hey, don’t look at me. Kids pick up on everything.” Sighing, he crouched down to Timmy’s level. “Yeah, it’s about Miss Abby. But you don’t need to worry about that, okay? How about we focus on these races instead?” Timmy’s face lit up. “Okay! But Uncle Ethan?” “Yeah, buddy?” “I think Miss Abby likes you, too. She always smiles real big when she sees you.”
