That in a room full of people, she would always be the one my eyes would search for. That when I hug my friends, she would be the one I kept close a little longer.
This little ritual has always been our way of keeping our promises and getting the truth out of each other. It came when we were in middle school. I got myself in trouble, and I asked him to promise not to tell any adult. I made him write it on himself so he would remember when he got to his house.
Wren and I have something special and undeniable, but I've always put our friendship first. I've always put reason before passion when it comes to him, because he's too important to me to lose him.
Fuck. I think I wanted him to kiss me. That man drags me through misery and then says the most honest words I’ve ever heard. He says I'm his favorite human. I want to be someone's favorite. I want to be Wren's favorite.
His eyes are on me when he answers, “It will always be her. Her over anyone else.”
I open the marker again, writing on my arm. "I promise that you can be as strong headed as you want, whenever you want." I take her arm. "If you just…promise to wake up," I say, my throat tightening again as I write on her again. A tear drops on the ink, mixing with it.
"I've had this since senior year of high school." He opens it, a beautiful golden ring with a deep emerald intricately attached to it that has my breath catching. "Of course it's for you. But I've had it for so long, I think I can wait a little more before putting it around your finger." I swallow thickly. "You bought me an engagement ring senior year? We… We'd never even kissed."
but it's just us now. Alex, Xi, Ella, Chris, Achilles, Wren, and I. Our chosen family.
