I can’t, in good conscience, hold you any longer. I won’t, in good conscience, deliver you back to that village, for your sake and theirs. You need to be set free.”
That makes no sense. He could have just told her that and asked her if she would like to join him back to help with the investigation. 🤷🏽♀️ Like, why does he think leaving her alone in the world with her magic suppress, it THAT country he grew up in, a good thing?
“Because Granny’s drugs have killed people dear to those in this pack. Some still want you hanged as a representative of Granny’s organization. They are not moved by your circumstances. They want our duty fulfilled. This will appease them.
They don’t have to be moved by her situation but they do have to face the cold hard fact that she didn’t make a dangerous drug and that someone has altered it. That’s like killing the makers of Tylenol because someone keeps stealing batches and altering them to be deadly…
I’m going to go ahead and check things out, probably change my knickers, and then I’ll be right back. You just roar and growl and wander out there in your fabulous nudity and get the show started. I’ll be back momentarily.” He dashed out, holding his ass. He was such a strange wolf, but he did know his stuff.
“The woman has absolutely no sense of direction. She was angling my way instead of toward the town, making enough noise to rouse the dead.” He clasped his hands behind his back. “I pointed her in the right direction and then shadowed her for a bit to make sure she got there. She went off course again—she has literally zero sense of direction and is apparently hard-pressed to follow straight lines—so I guided her until she was close to town and then drifted away.”
Frustrated, I pushed through the weathered door of the inn, intent on asking more questions. Maybe the innkeeper would have more insight than the young stable hand.
Why is she acting like she isn’t in walking distance of the pack of wolves that would be looking for her this morning? Like she got a helluva head start and is several towns away…
I wasn’t that naive, though. Everything would change when we got back to the dragon lands. He probably had a huge line of hopeful suitors. I was a mere distraction. What a fool to think I could be anything more. What ridiculousness to want it. I ignored the sting in my heart that accompanied those thoughts.
Author, considering what’s happening in this scene, these thoughts don’t even make sense here. They are in a heated throw of passion, having rough sex. There’s no way her mind would be capable of going there. And they are still going? It’s ridiculous.
