After Rube had appeared at the farm and told her about their father, the people he’d left behind, the changing identities, she’d thought of him as selfish, narcissistic. But the way he talked about his obsessions, the lengths he went to in order to escape himself, she realized he had a mental illness. It had diminished him. She felt sorry for him, for maybe the first time since he’d disappeared.
