He stood, looking deep in thought, with a cigarette pinched between his fingers. His brows were furrowed, his mouth tight, a sign he was displeased with something—usually me.
“Lilith.” I tilted my head back, meeting Zahariev’s gaze. “What?” One side of his mouth lifted. “I just want you to look me in the eyes when you lie.”
“You have a pretty mouth, little love, but you say the ugliest things.”
“I didn’t become a heathen until my magic surfaced,” I said. “What’s your excuse?” “I was born this way,” he said.
Hold me tighter, Zahariev, she’d said. If I did, could I keep her from breaking?
They will call her a demon, but I watched her transform, and I will call her goddess.
Of course, they will say Eve tempted Adam and again I will say—how many times will men blame women for their choices?
