“Power is not only in what we do, but in what we don’t do,”
“Don’t use my own words against me,”
“Oh my god,”
“You already sold me at ‘ice cream.’ ”
I don’t want to think about anything in my real life. That’s what books are for. To take you away . . .
I have five tattoos myself: a swallow for my mother, a wolf for my father, a quote from my sister’s favorite book, a sprig of aconite for my brother. And a fifth that I’ve never shown to anyone.
“You will have everything you want in this world, Anna,” he says. “I knew it from when I first held you in my arms. I knew you would take it all, and hold it tight.”
It’s supposed to be a kind of sanctuary. A temporary detente between the grudges and rivalries of the various families. But for the children of criminals, rules are made to be broken. Even the school’s motto Necessitas Non Habet Legem means Necessity Has No Law.
Whelan is the only one of us who got my mother’s freckles and green eyes. They look much wilder on him because he’s a little demon in human form.
Glancing over where he was sitting, I can see that he only ordered a small plate of stew, and that he already ate all of it, not a bit left in the bowl. There’s no way that was enough food for a guy his size.
“What’s wrong with Russians?”
“Everything,”
“They’re blunt and rude. Mean as hell, though not as mean as the Albanians. Then you’ve got the Italians, you know we’re all hot-headed and a lit...

I know it’s ridiculous because they’re just kids. But I want to be first in her eyes, the way she is in mine. Closer than blood.
Fucking great. I’m going to be sharing a dorm with the two most obnoxious people I’ve met so far.
He is just as mesmerizing as my mother, in his own way. They are Hades and Persephone: the King of the Underworld, and the Queen of Summer.
“If you don’t know history, then you don’t know anything,”
“You are a leaf that doesn’t know it is part of a tree.
A man who has no sense of history is like a man who has no ears or eyes?”
“That was Hitler,”
“I don’t think he took his own advice.”
“I’m sure you’ve all heard the expression, ‘the bigger they are, the harder they fall,’
“Beware a smaller opponent with a lower center of mass.”
“Why the fuck are you all so tall? What do they put in your milk in Chicago? It’s bad enough standing next to Miles.”
“I could have you stripped and hung naked from the Gatehouse if I cared to do it.”
“Professor Graves . . .”
“I didn’t know you thought about me t...

“Assholes and psychopaths. That’s half the kids at this place.”
He’s so fucking reckless. If there’s a rule, he wants to break it deliberately, just to see what happens. There’s no line for him. Nothing he won’t do.
Fantasies are so much more than dreams—they’re a vision of the path you need to take to get what you want.
“The movie’s never better than the book,”
“There’s wanting to be the man. And then there’s actually being the fuckin’ man.”
“I prefer to be the fuckin’ woman,”
“Only Germans put mayonnaise on fries.”
Leo has been ruining my life since before he was even born. He has everything, and I have nothing.
We’re not enemies—she’s polite to Ares and me when she sees us. But polite is almost worse than hateful. Because there’s no passion in it. No sense of care. There’s a barrier between us now. I can see her, but not feel her. It hurts so fucking bad to be this close to her, and yet so far away.
“You surprise me, Bram,”
Mafia honor dictates that you obey the orders of your boss, regardless of your opinions or feelings on the matter. Even if you didn’t pick this particular boss. Even if you hate his fucking guts.
“Sometimes the harder thing is to let go,”
“I told myself if I ever got you back, I would never let you go.”
“I’m yours, Leo,”
“I’ve always been yours.”
