“You want flowers, Darcy? I’ll buy you flowers.”
Daniel the Garden Gnome has been following Hayden since his grandmother gifted him to me back when we visited her for lunch one day during our third year at university. The biggest mistake Hayden ever made was telling me how much he hates garden gnomes and how creepy he finds them.
She gives him a cool smile, undeterred by his intimidating presence. His nostrils flare, and Hayden and I watch them like a tennis match. I’m in awe; she’s my new icon.
“If you wait for the opportunity to wear the fun things you have, you’ll be waiting a while,” she says softly. “Wear what you love whether it’s out on a date or to the grocery store.”
“That looks like my grandmother’s Chesterfield.” “Then your grandmother has great taste. You don’t know if you like things until you try them on, Darce.”
“This is the perfect time to reinvent yourself, Darcy. Madonna reinvents herself every decade, and if you shit on her Ray of Light era, we’re no longer friends.” “I would never.” I chuckle. “Good. You know, when I’m having a totally shit day and I start to feel down, I just look at my shoes and I think, oh yeah, I’m Dr. Georgia fucking Greene.” She grins. “Confidence comes from within, but it’s okay to jump-start it with something external.”
even though I’ve never worn something so bright, it doesn’t feel like I’m forcing myself to change. Maybe this is who I was the whole time, and I think I like her.
“You deserve to know your worth.”
“This is what you deserve, and I wanted to make it special for you.”
I never asked for anything and I never put myself first. I let myself be the person he wanted instead of who I am.
Yes, I’m weird and awkward, but I get the feeling they don’t care. I like it here, and I feel like I’m finally starting to find myself.
I’m racing toward a cliff with a cut brake line. My only option is to push the pedal to the floor and hope I clear it.
“We fall down, but we get back up and try again tomorrow.
