Luke Darling might live up to his last name with everyone, but I’m not entirely convinced. I mean, there has to be something wrong with him, right? No one can be that happy all the time,
The waitress interrupts the table’s conversation by asking for our orders. Everyone but me, the guy who didn’t look at the menu because he was too focused on the beautiful, irritated brunette sitting across from him, knows what they want to eat, so I pick the first thing I see.
“Stop stealing my food.”
“Is it considered stealing if you took one of mine when I wasn’t looking?”
“In my defense, I’m starving.”
“Here. We can trade.”
“I assumed she was a fan of mine.” “Have you met someone who isn’t?” Yeah. You.
I say to break the unbearable silence. I’m not the kind of person who enjoys them because it reminds me of too many days spent alone, wishing for someone to keep me company since my parents were too busy to do so themselves.
“Not going to lie. You seemed like the type of guy who would wear his white coat everywhere he goes.” “I take personal offense to that statement.” “Good,”
I swear this girl makes me want to laugh without purposefully trying to.
“Is this your casual way of telling me you’re broke?” “I prefer the term fiscally conservative.” My comment earns the best kind of laugh. My eyes widen. “Did you just…” “No.”
“Whoa. I didn’t think your internal software was capable of such a sound. Are you malfunctioning? Is there a 1-800 number I can call to get you help?”
Tonight, I didn’t only make Catalina Martinez laugh, but smile twice, and I’ll be damned because I’m already looking forward to when I can do it again.
Nancy You’re a good sister.
Me The bar is low.
What’s the antonym of that?
Fuck if I know. I’m a doctor, not a thesaurus.
Her tightly pressed lips are slowly curling at the corners. I swear I’m becoming obsessed with the idea of getting this girl to smile, even if it never lasts longer than a few seconds.
Do you have nothing better to do with your free time?” “Not particularly, no. It was either that or start a new LEGO set, and Aiden told me we didn’t have the space for another one until he moves out.”
“I will say that whoever earns her trust and loyalty better do everything possible to protect it or else they’ll have to deal with me.”
you going to be an overbearing ex?” “Worse. A protective brother-in-law.”
“That’s supposed to be worse?” “Yup, because anyone who hurts Catalina is guaranteed to upset my future wife, wh...

“Well, before this chat, I bought the Galactic Command Base LEGO set and planned on inviting her over to build it.”
Both of their jaws drop. “Is that a bad idea?”
“You bought a seven-hundred-dollar LEGO set fo...

Sometimes, I wish my mom would try a little harder with me, but instead, she always gives up at the first sign of adversity. With Gabriela, she bends over backward to be everything my sister needs and more, but when it comes to me, she seemed to have given up years ago, and in many ways, I did too.
She finally cracks, and a soft laugh pours from her lips, feeding me in a way food never can. Catalina isn’t the type for loud belly laughs that leave someone’s stomach aching, but I’ve never heard a better sound than the one she makes because of me.
“Stop encouraging him.”
“Don’t get mad at her for finding me funny.” “I’m laughing at you. Not with you.”
“So long as you’re laughing, that’s all that ...

I pull her into my side of the booth and wrap my arm around her, tucking her body closer to mine until there is no gap between us. Catalina fits perfectly, like a missing puzzle piece clicking into place, and I wonder how I’ve spent the last two years avoiding her.
“Would you like to hang out? Outside of working on the speech again?” She smirks. “As friends?”
We did not spend the last two hours together, flirting over drinks and stories of our lives, for me to be put in the friend zone. Fuck that.
He didn’t just kiss me. He ruined every kiss of my past, present, and future, reshaping my expectations and creating a craving that only he can satisfy.
“You look beautiful.” “Because I decided to wear makeup today?”
“No.”
“Because you look happy.”
“Just…give me time.”
“I can do that.”
“Even if it might kill me in the process.” “Good thing I know CPR.” “Now that’s one w...

“When I didn’t see you outside, I assumed something came up.”
“Is that Catalina code for you missed me?” I scoff at his comment. “There’s no place I’d rather be than here with you,”
Focus on the present. I’m trying my best, but what happens when the future I want is tied to the woman who is slowly drifting out of my reach?
It becomes clear to me that Catalina’s time in Lake Wisteria might be coming to an end after her sister’s wedding, but ours as a couple has just begun.
“I’d rather keep you on your toes.” “You don’t have to try too hard when you’ve got me wrapped around your little finger.”
Perhaps I should tie her up so she can’t leave for California in two days.
There isn’t a single doubt in my mind that I could fall in love with this girl. In fact, I hope I do. Just like I hope she can love me back.
“I can say for certain I’ll be moving back to Lake Wisteria after I’m done with this job.”
“What?” “I decided before you showed up.” “And you waited until now to tell me?”
