And just when he was getting comfortable, when this predator thought he’d finally gotten a read on my capabilities as a fighter… I stopped holding back. His eyes went wide when he saw it happen. When I loosened in my stance and brought the blade up to guard my face. The second when I bared my teeth and came for him. He spoke, then, at last. Just one word. “Shit.”

Rusarius. I’ll be more careful in the future.” “Where’s Ren?” Everlayne demanded. Kingfisher’s expression hardened. “I assume he’s still scrubbing his balls,” he said dryly. “If you’re trying to shock me by mentioning random parts of male anatomy, then you’re out of luck,” the blond-haired female snapped. “I’ve seen Ren’s balls. I’ve seen yours, too. I’ve seen everything,” she said, pointedly glowering at Kingfisher’s crotch, “so I know exactly where to aim my knee if you continue to test me. You don’t seem to appreciate the level of danger you’re in right now, Fisher.”

I risked a sidelong glance at Kingfisher out of the corner of my eye. “Should we, uh… knock?” An arrogant smile curled up at the corner of his mouth. “Sure,” he said, as if this was a charming suggestion made by a single-brain-celled idiot. A second later, he slammed the sole of his boot against the wood, and then the door was on the ground in pieces. “Knock knock.” He stepped to one side, holding his hand out in a mockery of manners, gesturing for me to go ahead of him. “I don’t think anyone’s home.”

face. “You could at least say hello before you start eye-fucking me.” “I wasn’t eye-fucking you. I was trying to see through all of this… steam.” I wafted my hand for effect, but the air was clear, there was no steam, and Kingfisher did not look impressed.

stomach. “It’s Saeris. My name. Call me that or nothing at all.” He cast an amused look over his shoulder, his lips parted a fraction, exposing the briefest glimpse of teeth. “Nothing at all? I like the sound of that. Come here and look at this, Nothing At All.”

“Bone,” Fisher said. “Human?” He shook his head. “I didn’t have any. Though, if you were willing to contribute—” “Stop.” Fisher stood up straight, half-closing one eye as he studied me. “Are your kind supposed to nap in the afternoons? You’re really grumpy. I’m the one with the hangover, y’know.”

“I’ve fucked plenty of humans,” he whispered. “Does that surprise you?” “Yes. Seeing as how you… seem to hate us… so much.” His mouth. Gods, his fucking mouth. I needed to look away. I had to. “I don’t hate your kind. I’m just disappointed by how breakable you are. If I held you down and fucked you the way I’m imagining fucking you right now, I doubt that you’d survive it.”

We’ll arrive even sooner if we trot.” Trot? I laughed scathingly. “Nothing you can say or do will incentivize me to smash my genitals against this saddle any harder or faster than they’re already being smashed.” “Feeling a little sore, human?” “Sore doesn’t come close,” I grumbled. “I’ll happily kiss all of your aches and pains better for you once we strike camp. I’ve been told my mouth has healing properties. Especially when administered between a pair of thighs.”

“I don’t enjoy hurting people. I don’t like it at all. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t necessary. To avoid far more serious pain, sometimes we have to endure a little sting. Sometimes, some of us have to inflict it. You say it so mockingly, but I do care about your well-being. You’re important. Without you, I can’t end this war or protect my people. I have to keep you safe so I can accomplish my goals. So yes, I’ll hurt you if it means I keep you safe. I’ll force you to follow me to the ends of this realm, because that is the only way I can make sure you stay alive. Now drink your beer.”

“In nature, there is a counterweight to everything, child. Light has darkness. Life has death. Joy has sorrow. And good has evil. That law applies, no matter which realm you exist in,”

“Are you going to tell me about my parents, or are you going to start undressing each other? Because I can leave. I don’t have to, but I can,” Carrion said.
