I don’t even recognize him. How quickly a man can go from the love of your life to a complete stranger.
“I know you’re nervous,” he says with a sly smile. I nod in reply, expecting him to tell me not to be, but he goes in a different direction. “You should be.” “Should I?” He scrunches his face. “Yeah, of course. I always get a little nervous when something really fucking amazing is about to happen.”
“If a man doesn’t give, he doesn’t get. End of story.
Queen.”
I won’t deny there is good in her. But in the end, the bad far outweighed the good.
You’re the only one I can really talk to whenever—” “You can talk to me.”
you are never going to love someone the way you loved me.” “Yeah, I hope not. That love almost destroyed me.”
“Look,” I say in a hurry, “my dad is a nice enough guy, but if you’re uncomfortable at any point, we can leave—” “Finn.” Avery reaches across the table and squeezes my hand. “You asked me to come here for support. So I’m here. Unless your dad slaps a hockey mask on and starts chasing us around with a machete, I’m not going anywhere.
“Emma,” I say, my voice unwavering and smooth as silk, “I’ll make sure to let Finn know you’re interested, but if he contacts you, I sincerely hope you have more to offer him than your asshole.”
“Champ, what are you doing? You can pull a much hotter woman than Avery.” My knees go weak, and I immediately slump into the empty booth behind Finn and his dad. I bury my head in my hand. This part I wasn’t ready for.
“Lower your voice when you talk to her,” I snarl at him as I snake my arm around Avery’s waist. “Or you’re going to hear me raise mine.”
“He doesn’t have to like you, but he sure as hell will respect you. And if Mason speaks to you like that again, he better not let me hear about it.”
Let the record show, Red Bulls are good for nothing except their tastiness.
