Little does he know he is the pawn in this game, just as much as I am. We both always have been, but the queen is on the board now, and it’s time to make sure she lives at the end.
This dipshit can get me near her, without those stupid other mates in the way. They are as good as dead when I track them down. They didn’t protect her. The fucking fools. “Good. I want weekly photo updates of her.
I’ll let you into the prisons once at night to visit Gwenieve, like you desire, but do not kill her.” I nearly blanch at the thought. Kill her? Fuck no. I’m not a danger to her here, but she hates me, and she should. Fuck, I hate myself for the past. For not being stronger.
They put me in here. Even my Nexus is quiet now, watching from my one eye. Her pain feels like mine, like our heart is being ripped apart and crushed. I don’t know why I expected more. They hate me. They hate me and they gave me up. Everyone hates me. I wasn’t born to be loved—only to be feared and eventually destroyed. My mother was right.
I shouldn’t have trusted them. They hate me, and now…well, I hate them too. If we weren’t enemies before, if I didn’t want to hate them as much before, them giving me up for this fate seals the deal between us. Screw them. I’m going to get myself out of here on my own. Like I’ve done everything. It’s always just been me. Because I won’t be used as a weapon by anybody.
He can’t look at me. “Maybe training your Nexus by dying would give you more control. It’s your mother’s theory, and she is usually right. It’s a Vian method we are going to use.”
He leans over and kisses the side of my forehead. “I’ll tell you about that one day, not yet. You need to be brave for me now, and remember, we love you. We don’t want to do this. When you know, I only ask that you don’t hate me.”
“You’re here to train me? You mean more torture? More people I have to kill for sport?” I laugh, but it’s hollow. “Bad luck. I don’t care about anything anymore, and everyone I loved is dead. So good fucking luck with that. As for Annie, if she ends up dead, I’ll let my Nexus destroy everything. I’m so close to doing that already.” He doesn’t laugh. He doesn’t say a word. “You never gave up.” “Well, shit changes,” I mutter,
That I was never truly alone. Because independence sometimes masks loneliness, and it’s not until you’ve been independent for so long that you realise you’re lonely.
She isn’t hurt. That’s good, but why? “The bombing. It was my mate. It was all my mate. He’s on their side and we are never escaping.”
“They died trying to protect me from you, and you don’t deserve to mention their names.” “That’s what you believe?” he questions, his eyes drilling into mine. “I’ve waited so long for you to appear, for this power to grace us one more time. They knew and didn’t give you up.” Crazy fucker. “What are you talking about?” “Nothing.” He blinks and carries
“Then when your other mates get here, they are dead. I’ll make every bit of their deaths awful. They will tell tales of the monster’s mates who died horrible deaths trying and failing to save their monster from herself. Do us all a favour and fucking let her out!” My scared, dangerous Nexus comes
“Why? You’re a monster, you’re the Morrigan!” he shouts at my back. “You bring death, not humanity. Not clemency!”
“No tricks. I make the rules for the night market, and I will not trap you here. You have my word,” he vows, and I remember he doesn’t lie. “Why do you want my blood?” He watches me with those eerie, all-seeing eyes. “I want the blood of the most powerful creature to walk this earth in a thousand years. I want the blood of a Nexus who has no idea what she is yet.”
“Your destiny, old one,” he answers, walking away to the other side of the tent. Creepy but alright. “When you come to me next, you will not leave. When you see me next, fate has a plan for your future, Gwenieve. It is not time yet.”
It was just a matter of time because she isn’t dead. Mates always find a way to each other, and it’s shitty, but I knew it could happen. Our blood-bound deal doesn’t change. We have our agreement, and it stands. It doesn’t make any difference that she’s here.” She shrugs a shoulder. “Stay away from her. Your Nexus needs to understand what’s at play.”
“Severi? Or am I in an audience with the King?” She is smart and can see what Gwenieve never has. “You know as well as I do that he can’t possess me when I’m near you, Georgina.” Georgina is Gwenieve’s twin, given to my father by their mother on the day she was born.
Gwenieve’s Nexus causes death, but Georgina’s? She is life. She heals and fixes anyone near her, and my father can’t stand to be near her. It doesn’t mean he hasn’t fucked with her mind almost as much as he has fucked up my own. There is nothing like having your father possess you to torture your mate whenever he wants.
“The first thing you need to do is make sure that her mates feel the bond is between you and them, and not her. Push her out. Be good.”
“She needs to feel alone and willing to listen to our side of the war. It won’t be long now before they come to Starlight City, and finish the war. She needs to be with me when that happens.” “Then I will be ready.” She walks past me, to the door. She hesitates for all of a second and then slips out of the room she has lived in her entire life, with one mission in mind: destroy her sister’s life.
