Olive hugged her stuffed wombat and grabbed the remote, flipping on her favorite thing to watch, baking competitions. A small flicker of something lit in Archer’s chest. Maybe she was his after all.
‘The one thing she did say was she thought you were destined for bigger things. She didn’t want to stand in your way. Olive was her dream. She didn’t want to derail yours.’
She wasn’t desperate enough to just move in with a guy she’d never met. Not again, anyway. The last time had been a guy she found off a flier hung up in the diner. He had supposedly been looking for a roommate but what he actually wanted to do was steal her underwear while she was at work. She wasn’t looking for another panty-stealer situation.
‘It’s kind of a big deal that you came back for her.’ Iris refused to identify as someone with daddy issues, she absolutely did not let the man who knocked up her mother have that type of control over her life, but it was a big deal that Archer had come back. He could have looked the other way and continued on with a life he’d already established. But he didn’t. He was here. And he was trying.
‘You know,’ Pete went on. ‘I had a dream that this diner was actually a pancake house.’
‘I don’t. I don’t have it bad.’ Estelle raised her eyebrows. ‘Iris.’ ‘Okay, fine I have it a little bit bad. But here’s the thing, he’s making me like … want stuff I never thought I wanted and now I’m confused.’ ‘What kind of stuff? Like being tied up or something?’ Marissa asked. Iris splashed her. ‘No! Not sex stuff, like actual life stuff.
Iris was an idiot. And she was pregnant.
‘I don’t even know how it happened,’ she said, as if figuring that part out would solve anything. ‘I’m on the pill.’ Bex snorted. ‘What the hell does that mean?’ Iris snapped. ‘You’ve never exactly been reliable when you take that thing, Iris. It’s only effective if you take it regularly and even then…’ ‘Oh, like you’re so damn perfect, Bex!’ ‘I’m just saying!’
