When you spend so much of it looking forward to the next thing, it can easily slip out from under you. I want to ask Sam if he ever felt that from us. Did he start crawling, and did I immediately say something about him walking? Did I wish away all his phases? Does he want to turn around and come back home and wait a few years before starting an entire adult life in another state? I—oh god, when did this happen?
I’ve got the biggest, most devastating crush on my ex-husband, and I hope I don’t get absolutely flattened by it in the end. Not again.
“Smells … smells were the worst for me,” he murmurs, chin grazing my ponytail. “They hang on the longest, and you can’t see them coming, so there’s no way to avoid them. Like living with a ghost. I’d walk upstairs and swear you were there sometimes, it’d be so strong, out of nowhere. Worse after it rained, like some old sports injury or something.” His low laugh is devoid of any humor. “I replaced the bedding and pillows and our bed still smells like you.”
She’s kissing me. Her lips are on mine after five long years. Five hundred years. She’s kissing me. I’m home.
“You’re still a Byrd.”
She’s mine and I’m hers, and all my life’s greatest happiness can be traced back to her, so I kiss her because I want to, and forget the rest.
