Because people, for zero monetary compensation, will spend tremendous time and effort making things that they want others to see—posting to Usenet newsgroups and writing blogs and chatting in chat rooms and making silly one-page joke pages. All this creativity and humor and knowledge, all of it being done, at some level, in the pursuit of attention, all of it part of a largely noncommercial attention gift economy, where people traded their attention back and forth.
