Had Elliot really ran off without so much as a yell for me to follow or glance back to see if I stayed behind him? Had he left me here so he’d have more time to get away?

I stood there, stunned, as my would-be mugger talked to me like we were friends, like he was surprised at Elliot’s behavior. “I’m sorry. Do you feel sorry for me?” I asked, finally snapping out of it. “I mean, more outraged for you, but yeah, he’s a pretty pathetic boyfriend. He should be here with his fucking fists raised.”

“Get down,” Evie said. “I think they are going to try and lose them before we… You know.” Evie moved her thumb across her throat, insinuating they would be cutting their throats. “Just hold on and don’t let go until Rook tells you to. And I’m getting off because I don’t want to hear you scream.”

“What the fuck are you doing, Rebel?” I asked, offering her a hand. “How do you get up and down onto this roof so easily?” she asked, nearly yelling. When she faced me, I could already see the aggravation all over it. “I jump.” She glanced over the edge and back at me. “Off of this ledge?” “That one exactly.” Her mouth dropped open. “How are your legs not broken?”

“Because if you try to outrun anyone or anything in first gear, you are going to lift that front and crash. Get yourself into second at least.” “I would prefer a scooter or something.” “First, I will not be letting you ride a scooter with us. It wouldn’t even keep up,” I said, scrunching my nose. “And second, how the hell would that work? I tow it behind my bike in the rare case you need to get away without me?”
