“My heir would rather die with her mouth full of those rebels’ secrets than kneel to the king who has spent his life shielding her from the cruelties of this world.” He exhaled sharply, rolling his shoulders as though shaking off the weight of what I’d done. “She needs time to reflect on her choices and the consequences that come with them.”
“A siphon is a rarity. A weapon.”
I feared that I had become the one thing my father always wanted me to be. I was a siphon. I was just like him. I was powerless on my own.
“You are not just the daughter of Marmoris, Verena. You are a daughter of Veyrith, the last daughter, and I bound your power to protect you. I bound your magic so it wouldn’t awaken until you found safety in someone who wanted you to have power, but did not wish to use it.”
“You’re safe. And I will burn this fucking world to the ground before I let anything happen to you again.”
This was no longer his rebellion. This was hers.
“I want to control it,” I whispered, and I could feel my blood rushing to my face, could hear it in my ears. “Of course I do.” “No.” She shook her head, but her silver eyes didn’t leave me. “You want it to go away.”
“The rest of the kingdom will fall to their knees before you, Verena.” He leaned forward and pressed a kiss just below my belly button before he stared up at me. “But please allow me to be the first.” Another kiss, this time on my right hip bone. “Allow me to show you how you should be worshipped.”
“Take anything you want, love.” One of his hands snaked around my hip until it pressed against my lower stomach. “Take from me until I have nothing left to give. I am devoted to you. Everything I have is yours to take.”
