“We should stop.” My lips hovered over his. I adjusted my position on his lap, settling my core over his hardness. Roark hissed through his teeth, and his fingers dug into the flesh of my leg. I tilted my head, drawing my lips to his ear, and whispered, “But don’t you dare.”
The woman winked and placed the polished pin on the tabletop and leaned onto her palms. “The nymph’s heart was drawn to both. Uncertain what to do, she prayed to the goddess of love. Touched by her plea, the goddess combined the two men as one. And that, they say, is what it means to love a heart—the lightest pieces, and the darkest.”
And you’d be wise to keep a distance. I didn’t lie when I said I am not a good man. She stepped closer, arching her neck so our noses nearly touched. “You never truly know a heart until you see the darkness inside. I might like to see yours.”
Skul Drek took a step closer. “You brighten the night, and I will fight to keep it.”
“Meaning Skul Drek—even as a piece of my cousin’s soul—has not answered to him. Beyond his control, blood has spilled for a duty he could never escape.” “He seemed to command it fine enough against the Stav.” “Because of you.” Emi shook her head, calming her tone. “Roark is a split soul. Divided between his darkest desires and the man he is in his heart. Skul Drek is a glimpse of his most brutal, cruelest, most inhumane attributes. A damn weapon to be summoned by the one who split his soul. And he was, for years. Until you.”
It should never have meant anything. Roark took a step closer. I was supposed to despise you, hunt you. Instead, you’ve brought me to my knees, begging for more of you. He towered over me, our chests touched, and I didn’t step back. We faced each other, a challenge, a desire. Roark’s eyes softened, and he spoke close to my face. Break me, I no longer care, as long as it is you who wields the destruction.
Elisabet looked back to Roark. “We’re not here to battle, after all. We only have cause for celebration. My second son, our prince, has finally returned home.”
