Happiness isn’t a zero-sum game. When you spread it around, everyone wins.
“Goddamn, Annie Bananie. You look like the kind of woman who remembers to switch her laundry from the washer to the dryer.”
Maybe I wasn’t meant to light up the sky like a firework. Maybe I was more like a firefly. And maybe I was okay with that.
“Butterflies are brave. It takes courage to work on yourself. It’s a painful, ugly process to grow into who you’re supposed to be. It takes strength to break a shell and become yourself.”
“Books take people out of their everyday lives. They give them a moment to say, “wow.” It makes grown-ups believe in magic again. It makes us believe in possibilities. It makes us hold on to the belief that, at any moment, we could meet someone who changes our life and existence completely. It makes us see the best in our enemies. It makes us hold our friends closer. It gives us compassion and empathy. But most of all, it gives us hope that no matter what, everything is going to be okay.”
“Get in the car, Annie. We’re going home.”
“I will worship your body. I will take care of all your desperate needs.” I widened my stance. “But after that little stunt downstairs, you’re going to drop to your fucking knees and crawl to me like a good girl.”
“We’re alive, aren’t we? Pretty sure that means we get to choose our own adventures every day. Pick like it’s your last. Be your own main character. Your life is your story. Make it a good one.”
“Sometimes love is loud. It’s grand gestures, glowing social media posts, roses, and candlelit dinners. Sometimes love is quiet. It’s a listening ear after a long day. It’s showing up with a snack and filling a need. And sometimes love is sunshine. It’s a light that you don’t know how you ever lived without.”
Courage isn’t a naturally occurring resource. It’s a choice.”
“Give me your fears. Give me your anxiety. Give me your insecurity. I don’t need you to change yourself first. I don’t want you to change yourself at all. I want it all because I want you.”
I craved his sunshine, but I was captivated by his darkness.
I grazed her lips with mine. “I love you.” Her mouth parted in surprise, but I filled it with a kiss. I didn’t say it because I wanted a response. I said it because I felt it. Keeping love inside was a waste.
“We have our whole lives ahead of us. And if that’s not enough, we’ll have the next lifetime, and the next, and the next.”
“I know I talk a lot and I say a lot of things, but I always mean what I say.” I tipped her chin up and kissed her softly. “So I’ll say it again because I want to make sure you hear me. I love you, Annie.”
“Because at the end of the day we aren’t measured by the love we hold back. We’re measured by the love we freely give without expectation.”
“If this is the only lifetime that I’ll get you, then it’s my favorite one.”
“You saved me the day we met. You saved me from myself. You’ve saved me a hundred times over and you don’t even know it.”
No matter how dark the night is, morning always comes. The valley can be as deep as it wants, but hope pays no mind. It anticipates the climb ahead, and holds fast to the knowledge that the view from the peak is like no other.
Baggage is only a burden if you let it drag you down. Unpack it. Sort through it all. Discard it or keep it. Wear it with pride. There’s nothing shameful about it.
