His eyes were kind as he reached for my hand again and squeezed. “Don’t worry, Just Annie. I’ll keep your hands warm.”
“I’ll keep your hands warm, Just Annie.”
“He’s calm. Focused. He’s at peace around you.” Pinpricks of heat flashed across my cheeks. I pursed my lips and looked down at my feet. “If I had to guess, I’d say that you’re his peace.”
“I’d spend a lifetime on my knees for you.”
“Good,” Grandma stated definitively. She pulled Annie into a back-breaking hug. “Come back anytime. Come back as Annie. Come back as Whitney. Come back as my grandson’s wife. I don’t care. You pick.”
“Don’t stop being loud just because someone doesn’t want you to be heard.”
I craved his sunshine, but I was captivated by his darkness.
“Then how can you be sure?” I smiled. “Because at the end of the day we aren’t measured by the love we hold back. We’re measured by the love we freely give without expectation.”
“If this is the only lifetime that I’ll get you, then it’s my favorite one.”
