I stood, half hidden by a tall banner with the Whitney West logo, and shifted my weight between my feet. A gaggle of six readers in matching book club t-shirts congregated in a cluster around Annie’s table. She was fucking crushing it as Whitney today, and I was damn proud of her. A brunette in savage stilettos stepped up to the table, handing over a trio of Whitney books. “It’s so nice to meet you!” Annie said as she carefully opened the cover of the first book and uncapped her pen. “I’m Whitney.” “Hannah Jane,” the woman said. “I’m so excited to meet you. We love reading your books.” Annie’s eyes flicked up to the group. “Is this your book club?” Hannah Jane shrugged. “Kind of. I joined not too long ago. They started meeting at my friend’s bar—” she looked around for the aforementioned friend “—she’s around here somewhere. So anyway, Bridget and I would eavesdrop on their conversations and get the commentary and then read the books on our own.” She laughed. “We finally just asked if we could join.” Annie grinned. “I love that. I’m a lurker, too. I probably wouldn’t have gotten the courage to ask.” Hannah Jane took the books from Annie and clutched them to her chest like they were beloved. “Thank you so much.” The gaggle of women, with their books all signed, dispersed.
