The front door opened, ricocheting off the wall. “Well, there you are,” Cassandra said as she stood with her hands on her hips. The ranch hands scattered, taking their plates with them. I looked around at the empty kitchen and living room. “What just happened?” CJ shrugged with a mouthful of food. “They’re scared of her.” “Don’t know why,” Cassandra grumbled. “I’ve never been anything but nice.”

“He’s always been that way,” CJ said as he held the baby with one arm and picked up Ray’s phone with the other. He pointed it at Ray. “But let’s make one thing clear. If you ever speak to my woman that way again, I will dig your grave while she slices you to ribbons with a kitchen knife.”

“I’ll plant you a million wildflowers, so you never open your eyes without seeing your beauty reflected back to you. I’ll build you that house with a glass roof, so the stars are never far. I’ll gladly give you my last name because I want you to be a part of this legacy. But I’d also take yours because you are the most important person in my life. I’d give it all to you, and I’d give it all up for you.”
