“Yeah—oh,” he says. “Just … fuck. You don’t … see yourself the way other people do.” I laugh nervously and look out the front window. “Are you complimenting me, Cole Ashby?” He shakes his head. “I mean it, Ginger. I’m telling you this so that, even though I give you a hard time, you know your worth. And I’ll always come when you call, okay? Just … find someone better.”
“You talk to Liv about me?” Definitely don’t hate that. “Wipe that smug look off your face, Law Daddy, we’re friends and I’ve mentioned it to her once or twice.” She’s playing dumb but I’m not having it. “I’m about to cut the shit, Ginger. Judging by what happened in Vegas, I’d say we like each other a little more than we let on.”
“Be careful, Sheriff. Keep being so nice and I’ll expect flowers every time I have to leave,” I blurt as we put the last clean dishes away.
“Do you drip down your thighs like this for all your friends?” He pinches my clit, causing my eyes to roll back. “I don’t think you do, because this mess, baby?” He smirks as he slides a finger up and down through my dripping slit. Fuck that feels good. “It’s all for me,” he says deeply. “I’ve been telling myself … it’s just the uniform,” I say in a whisper. Cole chuckles into my lips.
I smile behind him. Cowboy Cole and chocolate? I don’t say it, but I sure think it: if I had to have a first date with anyone, and wait half my life for it, I wouldn’t want it to be with anyone other than Cole Ashby.
I’ll never forget the first time in my entire life that I made love to Ginger Danforth Ashby under a waterfall.
He bends down to whisper in my ear. “Don’t look at me like that. You wanted it. This pussy is mine.”
“Take my advice now that they’re both gone,” Avery says, leaning forward. “If you have a shot at being happy, Ginger, don’t pass that up to please anyone else.”
“Midway through the summer, with you consuming my mind … my every thought, I had Carson McKinney pull out the fucking iron after a couple of beers, heat it up and sear that G into my ribs.” He takes a breath before adding, “Right where I felt your hands for days after you slid across my truck seat. I searched for that feeling for a long time. But I never ever found it with anyone else,” he whispers. “It’s been you for so fucking long, Ginger … you’re the baseline I compared every woman to. You’re the one I sought. I sought your attention, your sass, your fucking beautiful smile. Always.”
After years of pretending I didn’t want her with every fiber of my being, the idea of not giving a fuck is very enticing.
“Stop right there, Mr. Ashby,” she says. “We can talk about the semantics later. But if you think for one second I went into this casually, not realizing that you and Mabel are a package deal? You’re dead wrong. I love everything about that little girl. And besides, we’re a team. Remember?” She grins. “You don’t have to ask me. I volunteer. I know exactly what it means to love you, Cole. I think on some level I’ve always loved you. And I want it all. Every last piece. Especially Mabel.”
I’m starting to realize that the life I wasn’t even looking for is the best damn one I could ever ask for.
She nods, beaming, and when Cole picks her up and kisses me, I feel it. The peace I’ve been searching for. The place I’m meant to be. With my very best friend. All the years of twisted and broken paths that unconventionally led us to each other now fall behind us. Only one day left in our contract, but forever to go.
