I’d wanted to touch her the moment I saw her standing backstage, but when I heard her play, I knew she was the type of fire I sure as hell should stay away from.
Women like her… they’re the reason empires fall and kings turn into losers. The magic in her fingers has that kind of power. And I want no freaking part of it.
I don’t know who New Girl is, but she’s keeping my best friend from his rightful place. She’s in my way. And I’ll do what I always do with the things that keep me from getting what I want.
“Give her a chance to walk away for her own good.” “And if she doesn’t take that chance?” Zane asks. I focus on the desk where New Girl had been hunched over. “Then I’m going to turn her life at Redwood Prep into a living hell.”
He hooks his ringed finger in the gap and tugs me forward. “I’d really enjoy the chance to break you.”
Cadence Cooper has the freaking guts to ignore me. Me.
Seeing that tiny bit of skin made some part of me go haywire. It was a reaction that I don’t understand or particularly care for. The last thing I want to be is attracted to the girl I’m trying to run out of Redwood.
“You listen up, Dutch. I am not your property. I do not belong to you. And as long as there is breath in my body, I will never give you the privilege of telling me what I can and cannot do.” “I see,” I muse, nodding once. “And I totally respect that.” Her jaw drops. I don’t waste a second. Flattening my hand against her torso, I push her off balance and throw her over my shoulder.
Her eyes blaze with fury. “You’re seriously doing all this because I didn’t run straight to you when you called me? Are you that insecure? Or was I right earlier? Are you really off in the head?” New Girl’s got a lot of fire for someone who has no idea she’s poking at a bear. I watch her slam her hands on her hips and wait, angrily, for a response.
I grab her by the hips and pull her against me. I thought my body was wound up from Christa, but I’m not prepared for the way every nerve in my body snaps to attention when her hips connect with mine.
“Cadence has no idea what she’s in for. I’m going to ruin her so badly she never forgets my name.” That’s not a threat. It’s a promise.
I hope I ruined his wallet. I hope I ruined his entire day. That’s just a taste of all the hell I plan to bring on him. Dutch Cross is going to wish he never messed with me.
“I know I’m not the only one feeling this,” Dutch says softly, looking both relaxed and intense at once. “No,” I grab his collar. “You’re not.” Roughly, I drag him closer and smash his mouth to mine.
Mystery Girl did a number on me yesterday. And I’m not just talking about the slap that almost sent my brain sloshing out of my skull. A slap that came after she kissed me.
What the actual hell just happened? To say my body was raging to get under Cadence’s tease of a skirt is an understatement. If I had a little less self-control, I would have pinned her against the counter and had all the coffee cups rattling and shaking with how hard I ploughed into her.
I’m dangerous. She makes me dangerous.
Without thinking it through, I close the distance between us and throw my arms around his neck just as the net breaks and balloons come raining down above us.
The possessiveness takes me by surprise. So what if Zane hugs Cadence? It doesn’t matter to me. She doesn’t matter to me.
Then she threw her arms around me after the performance tonight. It was just a squeeze, as basic and innocent as vanilla cream, but my pants got so tight I’d thought they’d pop off.
Every nerve in my body is alive from her touch.
When I return, Cadence is standing closer to the stage. And she’s with some guy. My hand curls into fists when I see how close the other guy is to her.
I don’t want her for myself. She’s not the girl I care about. She’s the girl I need to run out of Redwood. I curl my fingers into fists and pound the chair. It’s like I’m being torn from the inside.
“I belong to no one.” “That’s where you’re wrong, Cadey.” His amber eyes are glowing. “You. Belong. To. Me.”
She’s wild. Fiery. Mine. Mine.
