He turned to face her, his expression moving quickly from surprise to smug satisfaction. “Something the matter, Temperance?”
“We kissed for too long,” she whispered. “Impossible,” he breathed. “I’d kiss you forever if I could.”
“I understand you don’t need me to take care of you,” he said quietly. “But it is my pleasure to do so.”
“You may think he is right for you,” Leo whispered. “But perhaps I am right too. And should you choose to kiss me tonight, he never has to know.”
Clearly he hadn’t been willing to sacrifice his happiness for theirs. Perhaps all men were built that way. Perhaps it was women who bore the burden of sacrifice.
He was the second person to call Tem the future queen. The first was Leo.
“I will not survive you,” he said, his voice a guttural whisper.
“I’d rather have half of you than all of Vera. Even if it means sharing you for the rest of my life.”
He was many things at once. And Tem loved him for it.
“I just…want you while I can have you.”
“I am greedy when it comes to you, Tem. I want every moment you’re willing to give me. Even if our marriage offers me nothing but the opportunity to humble myself before you, it would be worth it to spend what’s left of my life in your presence.”
“We will get you a proper jewel, if you wish. But I didn’t want to propose with gold.”
