“That’s okay, Red,” he says. “I was checking you out, too.”
“I bet you’re not like anyone else, Alice Everly.”
“I doubt anyone survives you,” he says, lifting his eyes to me.
“I won’t let you die. Or get hurt.” I stare into his eyes and somehow know he means it. “Whenever you’re ready, let me know. I’ll make sure you’re safe.”
“I’m turning thirty-three tomorrow. You’d think I’d be a little braver.” “I think the older we get, the scarier shit becomes.”
“Because I love defying expectations, and you, Alice Everly, seem to have a lot of them.”
“I flipped through it in the drugstore. Think of me when you get to page 179.”
“But the thing about love languages,” Charlie says, “is it’s not just about how we express love, but how we receive love. You need someone to do something for you that makes you feel loved. Someone to help you.” I shake my head. “I hate asking for help.” “That’s because deep down, you want someone to see what you need before you have to ask.”
“I want you to know that I don’t think you’re a turtle.” “No?” “No. You’re a Pegasus-unicorn, Alice Everly. You’re one of a kind.”
“You’re worth it, Charlie. Whether you believe it or not.”
“I’m in love with you, Alice,” he says. “I knew the day you crashed John’s boat that you were going to be trouble for me. I should have kept my distance, but I couldn’t stay away. And the more I got to know you, the more beautiful and terrifying it became. Until I knew I’d finally found the person I’ve been waiting for.”
