“He’s not my friend,” I call back. “Rude,” Charlie says. “Bring him up for tea.” Charlie turns to me, grinning. “Bring me up for tea, Alice.”
Luca: HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! Lavinia: We loooove you! Luca: You are sooooo old! Lavinia: But never as old as Heather!
“You’re incorrigible, you know that?” “I do.”
“It seems I’ve developed self-control in my midthirties,” he says.
“And you like me.” I reach up, running my fingers over his hair. The newly shorn strands tickle my skin. Charlie takes my face in his hands. “I think I might like you more than anyone.”
“Charlie Florek, I will not listen to you apologize for something you are clearly not sorry about.”
“I just remembered that I don’t like doing things I’m not good at.”
“I thought you were supposed to be shy,” he says. “I thought you were supposed to be bad,” I fire back.
“I didn’t bring my wallet.” His gaze dances around my face. I missed that naughty grin. “Then I guess you’ll owe me.”
“Want me to kick his ass?” “Yes.” I let out a long breath. “But he’s pretty strong.” My dad squeezes me. “So are you.”
