I made Jim a promise a long time ago that I would never reveal, not to a single living soul, that I possess the power to incite,
“It means you’re joining the Command.” He smiles without a trace of humor. “You start tomorrow.”
“I saw your veins when you touched him.” My veins? Clarity strikes at the same time Roe’s arm snaps out, and I watch in horror as he presses the gun barrel to Betima’s forehead. She freezes, all the color draining from her face.
The gunshot echoes through the dark night. Betima falls to the ground, her blood staining the gravel like spilled ink.
“You’re not timid or weak, Dove. You’re a firestorm, and you’re going to burn everything in your path if you don’t learn how to restrain yourself.”
“Yeah, I heard all about your Aberrant mother,” I say coolly, enjoying the way he blanches. Then I refocus my attention on Cross.
There’s no way Cross Redden is Wolf. There’s no conceivable way that could be possible. He’s not Modified. But his mother is.
“Is your favorite animal still a wolf?” He freezes. Staring at me, as if he can’t comprehend what I’m asking.
It’s rare that I feel safe. Protected. But I do in this moment. With Cross holding me. Wolf holding me.
“I’ve loved you since I was eight years old. And I’m still adjusting to all of this. Trying to merge the two of you. Daisy. Wren.” Regret thickens his voice. “I’m sorry I lashed out after we lost Tyler. Sutler. Jones. They were my responsibility. I was pissed at myself, not you. Travis is right. I led them into a trap.”
You’re in my soul, Wren. I take a breath and feel you in my chest. You’re inside of me. You have been since I was a kid, and the thought of losing you…”
He’s the only person I’ve ever been completely, truly, unequivocally myself with, and now he’s gone.
