I studied Maggie, wondering how she got such an odd name for a Black woman. She was a few shades darker than I with expressive eyes that told on themselves. She wore a thick beanie over her head but it was almost summer. I gathered she wore it like most people that couldn’t step out of the house without something on their head. Maybe it was anxiety or some sense of keeping her identity close to her. The hat symbolized something, I just couldn’t figure out what but it was a big part of her identity. Maggie seemed to be on the tomboy side but still feminine enough to not question her sexuality.
