Everything had burned, ever since that night at the Institut. First the twenty thousand books and then the thirty-five thousand photographic slides and then the countless people and then the proof that any of it had ever happened at all. It was a threefold devastation. Generations of history gone, the people still living killed, the Nazis eventually destroying all the evidence of their crimes that they could, now backed by the Allies who were throwing their few survivors into prison, upholding the Nazi versions of these laws, the final stragglers too afraid of further retribution to speak up.
