It’s such an unexpected delight that I bark out a startled laugh as the elevator arrives. “Careful, Lenora. Any more of that and I might just cancel our date.” “No,” she says, absolutely certain. “You won’t.” Clever little siren. The nickname pops into my head unbidden, settling with a sense of permanence.
“Yes, little siren. You’re the temptation designed just for me, the lure keyed to my blood, the song beckoning me toward the shore.” “Into the rocks, you mean,” I whisper, drawing on the scant mythology knowledge I possess. “And I will crash gladly, Nora.” His words are a low, dark caress, and when I don’t flinch away from them, he leans closer and curls his hand around my jaw. “I’d smash myself to bits for you. I’d let myself be drawn to you, a thousand times and a thousand more, even if it meant my ruin.”
That’s precisely what this kiss is. A pirate taking the bounty he desires. A kraken hoarding a prized treasure close.
“I do hope you consider a second date with me, little siren. Because if that’s the only taste of you I ever get, I’m not sure I’ll survive.”
“Why did you call me, little siren?” “Because I…” Why did I call him? On the other end of the line, he silently waits for me to answer, patient as ever. “Because I knew I could count on you to help me,” I whisper. Elias lets out a short, harsh breath. “Always, Nora. You can always count on me to help you.
Mate. My mate. Safe and in my arms. If having her in my home was a powerful, primal thing, then this is something else entirely.
He came home for me. He helped me last night without a single moment of hesitation. I called, and he came. Simple as that.
