I’ll love you until we’re dust in the wind, Camille Ashwood.
“I’m here, Cam.”
“I’ll get you out of here someday, I promise.”
“I’ll love you until we’re dust, Camille Ashwood.”
“You’re beautiful,” Dusty said again. “So fucking beautiful.”
“No. You’re a privilege, Cam. Being in your presence is a goddamn honor.”
“I can’t believe you did that when you were so young…for someone who wasn’t even a sure thing,” I said. I felt his shoulder shrug under my hand. “You’ve always been a sure thing to me,” he said softly.
“Ash, I tried friends. I really did. But friends don’t feel the way I do about you,” he said as he pulled me even closer to him. Our bodies were touching now. “Or the way you feel about me.”
“I’ve waited half a lifetime for you, Cam.” Dusty breathed me in. “And I would wait a whole one if I thought I had to, but here we are. Together. No distance, no timing, no ring…nothing is keeping us apart.”
Because loving you is the bravest thing I’ve ever done, and I’m not brave anymore.
“There are a few lovely bachelors here tonight that I think you should meet.” I felt my shoulders sag. My dad didn’t say anything. He was still sizing up Dusty. “Please…not right now,” I said as firmly as I could, but it was meek at best. “Not ever, actually,” Dusty said. His jaw was set. “This is none of your concern,” my father responded. “Cam is my concern,” Dusty said. “She always has been.”
“I’m always sure with you.”
“What if I got one for you?” Dusty said out of nowhere. I looked at him questioningly. “A tattoo?” “Yeah.” He nodded. “That’s…um…” “Permanent.” Shannon finished for me. “Yeah,” I said, nodding at the tattoo artist. “Permanent.” Dusty shrugged with one of his shoulders. “So are we.”
“I’m not supposed to say things like that, but, Ash, you’re fucking insane if you think I’m ever going to let you go again.”
I hoped for you.”
We went in two separate directions, but roads that go in opposite directions come back together all the time.”
“I want to wake up with you. I don’t want to say goodbye.”
you are everything to me. You always have been, you always will be.
“I love you madly and deeply. I love you in ways that people don’t believe exist in real life. I love you for who you’ve been and who you are and who you’re going to be, Ash.”
