I’ll love you until we’re dust in the wind, Camille Ashwood.
She didn’t know what flavor she wanted, so I told her to let fate decide. I said the same thing to Riley now, and she looked up at me with big green eyes. “That’s what my mom always says!” I felt like someone had just kicked the back of my knees. Even when we weren’t near each other, Cam appeared in so many parts of my life.
Riley scooted closer to me until she could lay her head on my chest. When she did, I froze. I wasn’t around a lot of kids. I didn’t really know what to do, so I just let her stay there.
“You don’t get it, Dusty,” she fired back. “You’re not a parent.” “No, I’m not,” I said, “but I’m also not an idiot, so I know this isn’t worth getting worked up for.” I brought my hands to her face without thinking about it. “And next time you’re tired and you need a nap, you come get me, okay? And I’ll come sit on your couch with Riley. I’ve watched Riley’s village work for Gus, so let me be the part of it that works for you, all right?”
When I was with Dusty, my head went quiet in the best way possible—like there was nothing I was dealing with that couldn’t wait until tomorrow.
“I’ll love you until we’re dust, Camille Ashwood.”
Dusty flashed me a grin. “I’m full of surprises.” He saw the necklace in my hand and nodded toward it. “Do you want me to put that on?” “I don’t think it goes with your outfit,” I said.
“Don’t do that,” he said. “Don’t hide from me. I want to see you.”
“You know how to waltz?” I asked. “Full of surprises.” He grinned, and I let out a shocked laugh. He was a little fumbly, but mostly, he was good—more than passable. “I used to watch YouTube videos when we were in high school,” he said. “I remembered you saying that you had to dance whenever your parents had or went to an event, and I wanted to be prepared…just in case I ever got to go with you.” “You mean in case I ever forced you to come with me?” Dusty shook his head. “No. You’re a privilege, Cam. Being in your presence is a goddamn honor.”
“You’ve always been a sure thing to me,” he said softly.
There’s a reason that rearview mirrors are small and windshields are big.”
“And what if it goes wrong?” Amos let out a half laugh. “And what if it doesn’t?”
“And I can tell you from experience that the most precious thing we have is time. There’s never going to be enough of it.”
I know the fact that I’ve been in love with you since I was seventeen is kind of ridiculous, and I know you’re mad at me, and you have every right to be. But, god, you are everything to me. You always have been, you always will be.
