She has rehearsed this moment in her head many times and here she is at last, finally sitting among women her own age with whom she desperately wants to discuss the things that matter to her: politics, architecture, history, novels, languages, all of it. And though she longs to serve up her thoughts and observations on a platter right now, she shoves her hands under her thighs and clamps her lips shut. It is important she does not put her new friends off with what her mother describes as Beatrice’s infernal and wearying interest in everything.
