Google offers an excellent analytics package (which makes it easier for sites to measure the return on advertising through, to take a hypothetical example, lots of Google search ads); Microsoft incorporates AI into search in part because its low market share means that the cost burden of AI is lower, while the high fixed costs of search mean that it’s sensible for them to buy market share even with expensive features; Meta supports open-source projects like React, PyTorch, and the LLaMA family of large language models, knowing that they’re likely to be the single biggest user of these products
