“It wasn’t that light-your-soul-on-fire love. It was comfortable love,” I admitted. “You deserve that burn-everything-to-the-ground love.”
“Law Man,” Ridley greeted. “Chaos,” I returned. Those eyes sparked. “Chaos?” “Can’t say you don’t bring that in your wake.”
Colt takes the weight of the world on his shoulders. And he’ll do anything to keep his sister or anyone else he cares about from harm. It’s the kind of duty that’s burned into a person.”
“Julie never recovered from what happened to her little girl,” Celia whispered. “Even though she got her back, she saw monsters everywhere.” “It’s easy to do when you’ve seen the evil out there,” I told Celia. “It just means we have to hold onto the good that much more. The only thing that can cast out darkness is light.” Celia studied me for a long moment. “That’s a profound thing to have realized for someone so young.” I shrugged. “Sometimes life teaches you lessons early.”
Chaos, I’m so sorry for being an even bigger ass. It seems I can’t help myself. But I’ll work on it. —Law Man
“You can stay at my place, Chaos.”
It wasn’t the first time I’d been in her ER for a case. This one just felt a hell of a lot more personal.
“Law Man,” she started cautiously. “You okay?” “Who. The. Hell. Did. This. To. You?”
“We aren’t taking chances. Not with you. Not ever.”
That he wasn’t alone.
Hell, yes, I was feeling things I shouldn’t be. Feeling more. Feeling everything. For a woman who was only temporary, passing through on a mission that could bring my family and me healing. Or leave us in wreckage in her wake.
“Chaos,” he growled, but there was an amber heat in his eyes. “Careful. You’re playing with fire.” My breath hitched. “You should know by now, Law Man, I’m not afraid of getting burned.”
“Excising the wound.” I shifted in my seat so I could really take him in. “What do you mean?” “Took me a while, but I realized that’s what you do. You find where the hurt and sick is and cut it out. It means reopening the wound, but it also means healing.” I stared at him for a long moment. “That’s incredibly morbid and kind of gross but also…beautiful.”
He understood the colors I painted my world with because he spoke the language of my pain.
“Haven’t you figured it out yet, Chaos?
You’ve had me breaking all the rules since the day I met you.”
But that was life. There couldn’t be true happiness without grief, no pleasure without pain. Each one made us recognize the other in equal measure.
He dipped his head, pressing his lips to our joined fingers. And I knew, after years of searching, I’d found my home.
He came to a stop a few steps from me, those storm eyes roaming over me. “Never seen a more beautiful sight. Not once. I’m the luckiest bastard alive.”
“Love you, Chaos.” “Love you, Law Man.” He searched my eyes. “Want to go make that permanent?” “Never been more ready for anything.”
