For all I knew, Ridley Bennett was a con woman making her way across the US by swindling grannies.
“Law Man,” Ridley greeted. “Chaos,” I returned. Those eyes sparked. “Chaos?” “Can’t say you don’t bring that in your wake.” Ridley lifted her glass, preparing to take a sip. “Or maybe you’re just boring as hell.”
“Breakfast burrito or the cowboy hash. I rotate between the two daily.” I chuckled. “I’ll do the burrito today and hash tomorrow.” “You got it. For here or to go?” “I’ll do here today. Need to get a little work done.” “I’ll get that in right now. Total is sixteen-fifty.”
“It’s easy to do when you’ve seen the evil out there,” I told Celia. “It just means we have to hold onto the good that much more. The only thing that can cast out darkness is light.”
“Don’t even think of laying hands on her.”
“News flash, Law Man. Life isn’t safe. Someone could hurt you crossing a busy street in broad daylight. We can’t protect ourselves from everything.”
“Someone hurt you?”
I squinted as she approached it. Even that was pure sunshine. Glittery teal paint and a fucking unicorn bell. Jesus.
I was so fucked.
This man had been a dick of epic proportions. Rude and cruel. A grumpy-assed prick. My nipples should not be reacting to him. It was a betrayal of the highest order.
I was a sucker for broad shoulders. They made me weak. But before my nipples could react, I noticed something else about those shoulders.
“Who. The. Hell. Did. This. To. You?”
“Sleep, Chaos. No one’s going to hurt you here.” I’d make damned sure of it.
But there she was. Storming toward me like true chaos in human form. And the moment her hand slid into mine, I could breathe again. It shouldn’t have been possible for chaos to be so calming, but it was. She was.
“Overbearing alpha males who are too good with their tongues,”
“Let. Her. Go. Or I’ll happily remove your balls from your body.”
“I don’t know what it says about my dedication to the feminist cause that I like when you manhandle me,” she grumbled.
