“I do love to critique a boy-man.”
“It wasn’t that light-your-soul-on-fire love. It was comfortable love,” I admitted.
“You deserve that burn-everything-to-the-ground love.”
“But that doesn’t mean saying goodbye to this lov...

Hell, I needed to get laid if broad shoulders and a single husky word was doing me in.
The hot guy was a hot cop. Even more interesting.
Because there was fire in those eyes. A kind of fire that spoke of vitality and an absence of fear.
Something about it, about her, held me to the spot until the connection was completely broken.
“For the love of all that’s holy, I hope she’s staying in town. You need someone to keep you on your toes.”
“Your love is a little violent for my taste.”
“Law Man,” Ridley greeted. “Chaos,” I returned. Those eyes sparked. “Chaos?” “Can’t say you don’t bring that in your wake.”
“Ridley here’s partial to The Emerald as well.” Fuck.
I did not need to know that this woman who smelled like smoky sunshine and looked like a walking temptation had a taste for my whiskey. So I just grunted.
“You a PI or something?” “Or something.” “She’s the host of one of the biggest true-crime podcasts out there,” a voice said as the chair opposite me was scraped back.
“She’s solved three cases completely on her own and found new leads on almost a dozen others.”
“I don’t know. There was something about her. Something that said she cared. She was desperate almost.”
“If you keep dealing with everything for me, I’ll never get stronger.”
“Colt takes the weight of the world on his shoulders. And he’ll do anything to keep his sister or anyone else he cares about from harm. It’s the kind of duty that’s burned into a person.”
“You don’t know what you’re asking. Digging up that sort of pain.” “I do know.”
“My twin sister went missing the night before our college graduation. One moment we were at a party, the next she was simply gone. Nothing left but her key chain smeared with blood. Police never had any leads.”
“You never found her.”
“No. And trust me, I’ve tried. I’m still trying. But in the meantime, I’m also trying to help others. I’m not always successful. Life doesn’t guarantee grand movie endings. But every once in a while we get one. We put the bad guys away so they
can’t hurt anyone else. That’s what I’m ...

“It’s easy to do when you’ve seen the evil out there,” I told Celia. “It just means we have to hold onto the good that much
more. The only thing that can cast out darkness is light.”
“That’s a profound thing to have realized for so...

Ridley’s living every single day wondering where her sister is. But she didn’t let that make her bitter. She channeled that hurt into helping others.
“I won’t say it’s easy. I battle it every single day. Gratitude is a choice. Just like looking for the sun.”
“Sometimes it’s finding those actual rays. Just looking up, closing my eyes, and remembering it’s still there. Every day it rises. Sometimes it’s looking for those glimmers of light elsewhere.
Those glimmers are all around us; you just have to open your eyes and truly see.”
“Don’t,” I snapped. “I forgave you once. Forgave you for being a dick of epic proportions at least three times. But now I’m done. Just stay the hell away from me.”
“Emmie wants her here,” Trey snapped.
“She supports what Ridley’s doing. Wants her to find the truth. So maybe both of you should ask her what she wants before assuming.”
“I appreciate that. But don’t take it too far, all right? Ridley isn’t a danger to me.” “She might be to me,” I muttered.
“I like that she keeps you on your toes.” “You would.”
“It’s that woman. The podcaster. Someone found her beat to hell at the campground.”
“You can stay at my place, Chaos.”
But yet here he was. Showing up when I needed him most.
“Law Man,” she started cautiously. “You okay?” “Who. The. Hell. Did. This. To. You?”
“Could you stay? Just until I fall asleep?”
“Sleep, Chaos. No one’s going to hurt you here.”
“Don’t be greedy, Chaos.” “I love being greedy,” I said, eyes dancing. “It’s how you get what you want.”
Those dark eyes flashed with a smoky heat, reminding me of my favorite whiskey. Our favorite whiskey.
“Be safe, Chaos. It’s going to piss me the hell off if you end up dead.” She grinned up at me. “You say the sweetest things, Law Man.”
“I’ll help, Chaos. But you are going to stay safe. No more putting your ass on the line.”
I opened my mouth to argue, but Colt shut me down with a single look. “We aren’t taking chances. Not with you. Not ever.”
Her arms looped around my neck as her legs encircled my waist. Then her mouth was on mine.
And the moment her tongue stroked past my lips, I was gone.
Ridley moaned into my mouth and almost made me come in my pants like a goddamn horny teenager. Fuck.
