He’s always helping her. He’s always kissing her or dancing with her in the kitchen. It’s pretty gross, but all my friends say I have the best parents, and I totally agree with them.
“Well, maybe that was the first time you were told, but I know for a fact it wasn’t the first time someone liked you.”
“You’ve always had good taste, Hallie. I like your vision. I trust you.”
“I’m going to go ask for her number.” “Hey, Rook?” He looks my way, so stupidly excited. “Yeah?” “Sit the fuck down.” “Yep.”
“I’m not yours either.” We’ll see.
“You sure look good in my shirt for not being mine.” “Get fucked, DeLuca.” I smile as I open the door. “Would love to. You just let me know when and where, Hart.”
I can’t fucking breathe.
“Hal, Luke would kill me.”
“So maybe let’s not tell him,” I add.
“Meet you on the roof tonight?” I smile softly at her. “See you there.”
An Italian dessert, obviously.”
“Ariel!” Taylor supplies as she and Max join the other two on the couch. “Absolutely not, Tay.” Rio’s brows are pinched. “Spoiler alert, but she gives up her voice because she thought some random dude was hot. We’re strong independent women here. The only princess movies we’re going to watch are the ones where they realize they don’t need a man.”
“You already fell asleep on me once last night. I need to keep you awake to hang out with me this time.”
“You drive me insane, you know that?” “Hmm,” he hums. “That makes two of us, love.”
“Things are going to change.” “They are.” “Doesn’t that scare you?”
“It’s you and me. I promise.”
“It’s because I know I’ve got a lifetime of getting these from you. We’ve got a lifetime of best moments ahead of us.”
“Take your time. I’m not going anywhere.”
“All right, Dad. No need to kiss his ass. He’s not that great.”
I sat there getting this permanently inked onto my skin, trying to convince myself I was only getting it as a reminder that love existed when the whole fucking time, I knew it only existed with you.”
“Don’t flirt with me, Hart. Not when you’re about to leave me all day.”
“We both know it’s going to be us in the end. What’s the point in wasting time?”
“But what do you want?” she asks. “You,” I answer quickly. “I just want you.”
“Um no…have you seen him? Don’t tell my boyfriend, but yours can call me anything he wants.”
“But in case it needs to be said out loud… Yes, Hallie Hart, you are my girlfriend. Though, you should know, there’s a good chance I’ll be changing both that title and that last name one day.”
I should probably be concerned that she’s clearly upset, but I really enjoy it when she’s feisty like this.
But we aren’t on opposite teams anymore, baby, so put down the armor.”
“Stop trying to be cute right now.” “I’m not trying. It just comes naturally to me.”
“Rio, playing for Boston is your childhood dream.” I shake my head. “You’re my childhood dream.”
I watch as each of my friends catch their partner’s attention from across the yard. I’ve witnessed this happening for years. This silent check-in in a crowded room. A soft smile before continuing their conversation. A discreet wink. A little smirk.
