I’m trained to be on high alert at all times. It’s been instilled in me since I was a little boy protecting my stepbrother from Father’s rages, long before my formal training began. For as long as I can remember, it was instinct. But protecting Micah was a worthy cause. Probably the only worthy cause I ever had.

I learned to embrace it, and to stand up for myself, and it ultimately made me stronger. If I had the choice to go back, I wouldn’t change anything about myself. I’d change the fucking world to make it less shitty, so other kids aren’t forced to be that strong, but I wouldn’t change a thing about me.

I’d rather sleep well than fuck well. No question. Anyone who says otherwise has no idea what it feels like to never be safe in your own home.

Thank fucking Krishna, Jesus, Troye Sivan, whoever. I don’t care. I’m just glad he’s asleep.

I’ll show him that he absolutely, incontrovertibly belongs to me, and anyone who wants to take him away will have to pry him out of my cold, dead hands. Including his own self-sabotaging brain.
