“And here we all are, believing our united forces have herded the monsters into their spelled cage.” “They missed one.” He inhaled deeply. Exhaling, he smirked. “Afraid, Princess?”
He’d always known, and he’d traded me like a smudged jewel regardless.
“You can’t scare me,” I whispered, even as fear hitched my breath. “Not with games I am happy to play.”
“Give me back my fucking breath.”
he murmured with a calm that shouldn’t exist. “Go and bathe, dread.”
Even if I had the desire to argue with him, I knew it wasn’t the time. I opened my eyes and stared into his, then nodded and slipped soundlessly back into his rooms.
“I just need your husband to die.” Although his tone made me more than uneasy, I still tried to delay whatever his plan might be. “Have you seen him?” I gestured lazily toward the thunderous noise coming from the other side of the castle. “I don’t like your chances.”
“I do believe I’m staring at you.” “I do believe you can do better after leaving me to rot for three weeks.”
